The critically-acclaimed documentary "How to Survive a Plague," directed by David France, will be shown in a free screening on Tuesday, March 12 at 6 p.m. The screening will be held in Haigh Auditorium at the University of Toledo's Center for Visual Arts.

The event is presented by Sue Carter, social worker and clinical counselor in the Ryan White Program at UT Medical Center, and Mysoon Rizk, Associate Professor of Art History. There will be a brief reception prior to the screening and a discussion afterward.

The film tells the history of ACT UP, the activist organization that brought attention, compassion, and resources to the fight against HIV/AIDS, beginning in the 1980s. It is drawn from hundreds of hours of archival footage from ACT UP meetings, marches, and events, and interviews with activists, medical professionals.

By watching the decades-long work of ACT UP unfold, audiences see how its fight with AIDS united several generations in a struggle for attention to the issue, priority for drug testing and easy distribution, and respect for its constituents among policymakers, pharmaceutical companies, and the media. The film highlights the role of activists in bringing a critical issue to the forefront of the American consciousness.
