Lourdes University's Spring Choral Concert
Lourdes University’s Department of Music is pleased to present its annual spring choral concert on Sunday, May 5. This year’s concert, “Songs for a Sesquicentennial: The Civil War and Cinco de Mayo,” will take place in the Franciscan Center at 7 p.m. Karen T. Biscay is the director and Olga Topuzova-Meade is the accompanist.
The Lourdes University Chorus and Good Company Ensemble present old and new choral works in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and the signing in 1863 of the Emancipation Proclamation. Lourdes chorister and professional singer/guitarist Miguel Saucedo will collaborate with the choirs to make history come alive through music with a set of Mexican folk songs connecting the events of Cinco de Mayo in 1862 with the Union cause in the Civil War.
The evening will feature original sheet-music renditions of songs published during the war by George Root, Daniel Emmett and Patrick Gilmore; new arrangements of other historic songs from the period; a poignant setting of the famous Sullivan Ballou “Dear Sarah” letter; and a new setting of a poem commemorating the death of General Philip Kearny at the Battle of Chantilly in 1862.
Free and open to the public. Please contact Karen T. Biscay at 419-824-3772 or email [email protected] for additional information.
