BGSU offers Summer Music Institute for youth
Bowling Green State University’s College of Musical Arts will offer its annual Summer Music Institute program for junior high and high school students from June 16 through July 3. The Summer Music Institute at BGSU, “Where Music Takes Flight,” offers nine weeklong camps in three sessions that target the needs of young instrumentalists, recording artists and vocalists. The institute has been hailed by the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins University as “one of the best summer programs for aspiring young musicians.” Session One, from June 16-21, features Vocal Arts Camp, Double Reed Camp, String Camp and Piano Camp. Session Two, June 23-28, features Flute Camp, Super Sax Camp, Recording Camp and Brass Camp. The Musical Theater Camp runs from June 27 to July 3, finishing with a professional performance of “All Hands on Deck,” a 1940s musical revue. College of Musical Arts faculty members assign staff, design curriculum and hire guest artists. This year’s camp directors include Christopher Scholl, vocal arts; Bill Mathis, brass; Solungga Fang-Tzu Liu, piano; Mark Bunce, recording; Susan Nelson, double reed; Conor Nelson, flute; Matthew Daline, string; Michael Ellison, musical theater, and Jeff Heisler, Super Sax. Among this year’s guest artists are Alan Chow, professor of piano at Northwestern University, for the Piano Camp, and off-Broadway actor Jody Madaras as part of the musical theater camp. Musical theater students perform on their own but will also have the chance to audition to be part of the finale performance of “All Hands on Deck.” Fees for the camps vary from $275 to $645 depending on the camp chosen, housing arrangements and meals.
