Nautical Archaeology Training Workshop

The Great Lakes Historical Society’s Peachman Lake Erie Shipwreck Research Center (GLHS’s PLESRC) and the Maritime Archaeological Survey Team (MAST) will present the 2013 GLHS/MAST Nautical Archaeology Workshop and Training will take place Saturday, April 27, 9am-4pm, at the Maritime Academy, 803 Water Street, Toledo, OH and Sunday, April 28, 9am-3pm, on the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship, 1701 Front Street, Toledo, OH. In water practice at White Star Quarry, SR 300, Gibsonburg, OH will take place on Saturday or Sunday, May 18 or 19. Three levels of training will offer amateur archaeologists from across the region, including Canada, the opportunity to become an integral part of preserving the shared history of the Great Lakes. Workshop participants are registered for one of three following levels: Basic Level Participants will become a member of MAST and take part in our ongoing archaeological field work. This level teaches the basics of nautical archaeology, why we do it and how to do it. Topics include: Ship Parts, Trilateration, Survey Equipment, and Laws and Ethics. Advanced Level (Prerequisite – Basic Level) Takes the Basic Level training a step further. This level teaches how to identify and catalog a cultural site. Topics include: Survey Logistics, Preliminary Documentation, the Great Anchor Project and other special topics. MAST Tune-Up (Prerequisite – Basic Level) This is for MAST members that may have not been involved in awhile and are looking for a way to tune-up their skills and refresh their understanding of Trilateration. This class is on Sunday, April 28 only and one day at the quarry in May. Workshops include instruction, workbooks, snacks and lunch for two classroom days. 9th Annual MAST Dinner The 9th annual MAST dinner, Saturday, April 27 will take place at the Maumee Bay Lodge and Conference Center. Keynote speaker will be Dr. Gary Gibson, War of 1812 Scholar and Historian who will be discussing Frontier Fleet: The United States Navy on Lake Ontario during the War of 1812. The 9th Annual MAST Dinner is open to all.
