One of the best choices for a Young Rep Production is the classic Fiddler on the Roof and the Toledo Repertoire Theatre's youth ensemble is doing just that. Based upon the struggle of a family to live in a world that is rapidly changing around them, the Broadway hit explores themes that are relevant to kids of any age, in any time period.

First mounted in 1964, Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of Tevye and his five daughters living in Tsarist Russia in 1905 on the eve of the Bolshevik Revolution. The poor milkman is not only faced with the upheaval of a new world order in politics, he is seeing the disintegration of his children's commitment to his Orthodox Jewish faith, lifestyle, and customs. How Tevye responds to these disruptions while still wanting the happiness of his daughters is the challenge. It's a struggle parents still face today.

The Toledo Repertoire Theatre performances of Fiddler on the Roof will be held Thursday through Saturday July 18 to 20 at 7 p.m., and a 2:30 p.m. matinee will be offered on Sunday July 21. Tickets are reasonably priced at under $10 and available online.

A special aspect of this show is that it is fully staged with teen actors between the ages of 14 and 19 years old. Many of the performers have attended the theatre's prestigious Rep Ed program, which offers acting, voice, dance, design, and technical arts classes, workshops, and summer camps.

Based on the 1894 Yiddish book Tevye and His Daughters by Sholem Aleichem, Fiddler on the Roof was the first Broadway production to break 3,000 performances. It did not hurt that the director and choreographer was the famous Jerome Robbins in his last Broadway staging, the sets were based on the work of Marc Chagall, and the lead was none other than Zero Mostel. Many famous actors and actresses appeared in Fiddler over the years including Bea Arthur, Bette Midler, Bert Convy, Herschel Bernardi, Theodore Bikel, Pia Zadora, and even Leonard Nimoy.

Fiddler is a timeless work because it is not sappy. Yes, there are many poignant moments, as when Tevye sings: "Where is the little girl I carried?" in the beautiful song "Sunrise, Sunset" at his daughter's wedding. Or when Tevye and his wife Golde from a customary arranged marriage sing "Do You Love Me?", realizing they have love that has grown from working on life and raising a family together.

But it's the wonderful humorous lyrics of songs like "If I Were a Rich Man" or "To Life" that lift the musical from what could have become sentimental drivel. The fiddler is actually a metaphor for survival in life. By following tradition with joy and hopefulness, it is thought that communities can overcome uncertainty and hardship.

Fiddler on the Roof is wonderful entertainment for the entire family, and with kids as the entire cast and crew, your own children are sure to relate to the new production at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre this summer. Be sure to get your tickets today before they sell out!
