Playing with the Kid: Overview of Toledo's Parks/Playgrounds
Venturing out into the nearby parks and neighborhoods is a great way to break up the monotony of a routine, meet other parents, and let kids get in a little activity. Toledo's parks and playgrounds offer a variety of options for playing with the kiddies, whether they're babies or 10- to 12-year-olds.
Choose from parks and playgrounds along Maumee Bay, in central Toledo, or on the outskirts of town. With dozen of places to go to, Toledo families can keep busy at the park from spring through fall.
Parks and Playground Options
Located near Maumee Bay, Friendship Park boasts year-round activities for the family, including Easter Egg Hunts during the springtime and summer sports such as tennis. Bring a picnic lunch along and make a day of it with the bay view in the background. There's also a banquet hall and recreation center on the grounds.
As the name indicates, there are plenty of water activities to enjoy at this park, such as canoeing, rafting, or just playing on the beach. But it doesn't have to be summertime for families with children of all ages to have a good time at Waterworks Park. Bring the jogging stroller and enjoy a run on one of the nature trails, go camping, go biking, or just let the kids play on the playground.
Waterworks Park is located near Waterville in Lucas County.
Located east of Highway 475, Winterfield Park is a great place to let the younger kids run loose on the playground. Older children might enjoy playing baseball on the baseball diamond or tossing a Frisbee around in the open field. Bring along a picnic, and don't forget to pack the bug spray during summertime.
Sometimes neighborhood parks are the best places to go with the kids. Asbury Park is one such place, where families meet up in the evenings and adults chat while the kids play. Each summer, the neighborhood pitches in and throws a huge party in the park. This is a terrific place to spend a few hours when a simple park with a playground is all that's needed.
This waterfront park aspires to be like Chicago's Millennium Park once the summer of 2013 renovations are complete. Families with children ranging in age from a few months old to the preteen years will enjoy the riverfront, movies and concerts in the park, as well as seasonal activities and exhibits.
Something for Everyone
Whether it's wintertime or the dog days of summer, there are plenty of parks and playgrounds in the Toledo area to keep families busy year-round. Those living in the area can try out various parks to see which ones they enjoy most. As their children get older and outgrow certain playgrounds, there will always be plenty of other options available to keep the family outdoors and active. Toledo prides itself on offering places for the community to gather so they can visit and play.
