New Program Aimed at Decreasing Evictions in Lucas County
Catholic Charities Diocese of Toledo is hosting a press conference at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 1933 Spielbusch Ave., Toledo, to announce the start of a new program, Tenant Readiness, aimed at decreasing evictions in Lucas County. Funding for the program is being provided through a two-year, $41,765 grant from the Toledo Community Foundation. The Toledo Real Estate Investors Association is also partnering with Catholic Charities and has assisted with planning for the program.
Since 2004, Catholic Charities has provided emergency rent and mortgage assistance to individuals and families facing eviction or foreclosure. Last year, the agency received 1,085 calls for emergency housing assistance and was able to help 145 clients with available government funding. The agency is now seeking to partner with Lucas County landlords and tenants to take a proactive approach to help local residents remain in their homes and reduce eviction rates. Tenant Readiness will include risk assessment, education and case management for tenants before and after they sign a lease.
Catholic Charities serves 51,000 people of all backgrounds in the Diocese of Toledo annually by providing food, shelter, prescription and emergency rent assistance as well as adoption services, jail and prison ministries and guardianship services to the elderly.
