Celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness Month
October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo (DSAGT) is celebrating with the annual Buddy Walk, a one-mile walk in recognition of the many achievements and abilities of people with Down syndrome. The walk will be held at The Shops at Fallen Timbers in Maumee.
The fun-filled festivities begin at noon and the walk at 2 p.m.; the day will be energetic with an on-site DJ and other entertainment. Participants will have opportunities to win cash and other prizes in a raffle and through team awards, such as highest fundraising team, new team with five or more members and more.

The National Buddy Walk® Program has been running annually since 1995, with chapters across the country celebrating National Down Syndrome Awareness Month every October. The goals of the program are to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to positively influence local and national policy and practice. Participation in the one-mile Buddy Walk is open to anyone regardless of ability or training. Last year alone, Buddy Walk events across the country raised more than $11 million to benefit national education and advocacy initiatives, as well as local programs and services.
Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition; one in every 691 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome. Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care and positive support from family, friends and the community enable people with Down syndrome to develop to their full potential and lead fulfilling lives, attending school and work and contributing to society in many wonderful ways.
About DSAGT
The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo (DSAGT) provides current and up-to-date information on Down syndrome, as well as emotional support, to parents, families and people with Down syndrome, and educational materials for hospitals to provide to parents. Through our new Education Readiness seminars, we are able to help both parents and teachers bridge the gap between the school district and our organization. DSAGT promotes public awareness and acceptance of those with Down syndrome, celebrating with our families and friends through social activities such as an egg hunt, summer picnic, Halloween hayride, holiday party, teen group outings, annual golf outing and, of course, the annual Buddy Walk.
