Tower Brass Begins 35th Season with BG Concert
Nationally-known and Bowling Green-based brass ensemble The Tower Brass Quintet will join organist Kevin McGill for a concert of organ and brass on Sunday, September 22. Concert time is 4:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 315 S. College St., Bowling Green.
This free concert is open to the public.
The eclectic program will include organ and brass works by Karg-Elert, Richard Strauss, and Handel, as well as an antiphonal setting of Giovanni Gabrielli’s “ Canzon Duo Decimi Toni.” Additionally, the Tower Brass will perform Bramwell Tovey’s “Santa Barbara Sonata,” “Scherzo” by Karl Pilss and a rousing arrangement of Saint-Saens’ “Pas Redouble.”
Sunday’s concert marks the beginning of the 35th season for the Tower Brass. Although they have built a national reputation, the ensemble’s roots are local, having had its beginnings as a graduate brass group at Bowling Green State University in 1979. After graduating from BGSU and launching their career as a professional chamber music ensemble, the Tower Brass scored international success with a prize-winning performance at the International Brass Chamber Music Competition in Barcs, Hungary. They have since gone on to give more than 500 performances in twenty-five states and have collaborated with several of the world's other premiere brass ensembles, including the London, Budapest, Annapolis and American Brass Quintets. Tower Brass concerts and recordings have been heard on National Public Radio's All Things Considered, the American Composer's Alliance Series, Voice of America, Hungarian State Radio and WNCN in New York. Additionally, they have performed three times on WGTE’s Live from FM91 Program. The Tower Brass Quintet has released nine recordings and can also be heard on a compilation disc entitled “Convergence” released by Parma Recordings, NYC.
Members of the Tower Brass Quintet are Brian Bushong and Charles Saenz, trumpets; Bernice Schwartz, horn; Dan Saygers, trombone; and David Saygers, tuba.
