"New Art and Sound" multimedia exhibit in BGSU art galleries
“New Art and Sound,” an exhibit featuring installations by three celebrated artist/musicians, will debut Oct. 16 in Bowling Green State University’s Fine Arts Center.
Free and open to the public, the show will be on display in the Dorothy Uber Bryan Gallery from Oct. 16 to Nov. 17. Gallery hours are 1-4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, 6-9 p.m. Thursdays, and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.
Artists participating in the event include George Lewis, Terry Adkins and Pamela Z. The exhibit was curated by Jacqueline Nathan, BGSU galleries director.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the BGSU Fine Arts Center Galleries will host a performance in the gallery by Pamela Z at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16, which will be followed by a reception for the artist.
The installations in the gallery will be: “Information Station No.1,” an interactive sound experience by George Lewis; “Infinity” by Terry Adkins, a visual meditation on the album of the same name by John Coltrane; and “Baggage Allowance” by Pamela Z, a medley of suitcases with surprising contents that reflect travel, loss and remembrance.
Lewis is also the featured composer for this year’s New Music and Art Festival weekend, which kicks off with the gallery exhibit and performance. He is the Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University and a McArthur Fellow (2002). His work as composer, improviser, performer and interpreter explores electronic and computer music, computer-based multimedia installations, text-sound works, and notated and improvised forms, and is documented on more than 140 recordings.
Pamela Z is a composer/performer and media artist who makes solo works combining a wide range of vocal techniques with electronic processing, samples, gesture-activated MIDI controllers, and video. Among her numerous recognitions are a Guggenheim Fellowship, Creative Capital Fund and ASCAP awards.
Adkins is a visual artist, musician, activist and cultural practitioner who pursues an ongoing quest to uphold immortal figures to their rightful place in the landscape of regional and world history. He is a professor of fine arts at the University of Pennsylvania.
Also showing at the BGSU Fine Arts Center Oct. 26 through Nov. 22 is “As They Like It: Chicago Artists Interpret Shakespeare,” in the Willard Wankelman Gallery.
The Ohio Arts Council helped fund both exhibitions with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. “New Art and Sound” also received funding from the BGSU Ethnic Cultural Arts Program.
BGSU art galleries are located in the Fine Arts Center on the BGSU campus, and feature art by national, state and regionally recognized artists, talented faculty and students, and community members on a rotating basis. Exhibitions and artist talks are free and all are welcome. Paid parking is available during the week, and weekend parking is free.
