Sustainability Day at Lourdes University

On Wednesday, October 23, Lourdes University will host a series of activities in honor of National Campus Sustainability Day and National Food Day. The activities, which are free and open to the public, will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. throughout Ebeid Hall. Highlights of the day include:

Sustainable Food Panel Discussion – 4 p.m. (Ebeid Hall room 104)
Manager Yvonne Dubielak of Toledo GROWs, Urban Farmer Bryan Ellis of The University Church, and Chief Thought Officer Sam Melden of Food for Thought will serve on a panel discussion of sustainable food practices and urban farming.

Climate Change presentation – 1 p.m. (Ebeid Hall room 101)
Sr. Sharon Havelak, OSF, will share a personal presentation titled “The Gathering Storm: How Climate Change Impacts Our Lives.” Dessert and drinks provided.

Sister Cities Sustainability student project – 11:30 a.m. (Ebeid Hall 101)
Lourdes students in the English 101 Hybrid class have identified environmental concerns in their home city, as well as an international “sister city” that is dealing with similar concerns. Working with the Sister Cities International organization as an audience, students will present their proposals calling to initiate a special relationship between his/her home city and “sister city,” which will be based on creating and exchanging common solutions to shared environmental problems.

Campus Sustainability Fair – 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Ebeid Hall)
Fair participants can speak with representatives and browse informative displays on the following topics:
Climate change: projected climate change in the Great Lakes region, climate adaptation by hospitals, climate adaptation by Pacific Island nations, climate change and agriculture, and the effects of climate change on public health (Biology student presentations)
Agricultural sustainability (a S.A.V.E. organization ongoing lecture series)
Garden initiatives with children
Children and animal connections
The Sylvania Franciscan Village’s Care for Creation Document & Green Fund
Sisters of St. Francis community garden (featuring Sr. Jeremias and Sr. Grace Ellen)
