Winter Wheat Writing Festival welcomes writers
Writers of all types of fiction, nonfiction and poetry are invited to find creative nourishment at the annual Winter Wheat Festival of Writing at Bowling Green State University Nov. 14-16.
Sponsored by the Mid-American Review, the festival is now in its 13th year and features workshops, readings, discussions and a book fair. Registration is open from 2-5:45 p.m. Nov. 15 in the third floor lounge of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union or register online. A donation of $50 is suggested. A complete schedule can also be found on the site.
Workshops are designed for a variety of writing styles, and offer both practical advice, such as working in the electronic medium and using research in both fiction and nonfiction, to the creativity-inspiring, such as using the sense of place, the value of a good villain and even the role of the haunted. Poetry workshops range from Meditative Poetry to Poets on Sports.
Among the notable alumni of BGSU’s Creative Writing Program participating this year is Mark Brazaitis, author of “The Incurables,” “The Other Language,” and “Julia & Rodrigo.” Brazaitis kicks off the festival with a reading from his work at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in Prout Chapel.
Alumnus Matt Bell, author of “How They Were Found,” “Cataclysm Baby,” and “In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods,” will be part of a live podcast called “SummerBooks” presented on Nov. 15 by Renee Nicholson and Natalie Sypolt. Bell will also give a reading at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union Theater.
Poet Tracy Brimhall, author of “Rookery and “Our Lady of the Ruins,” gives the last reading of the festival, from 4-5 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Union Theater, followed by dinner and an open mic reading.
