Are You Ready to Celebrate International Education Week?
Like virtually everything else on Earth, education has gone global. If America - from Toledo through the rest of the country - is going to remain competitive, its young people must be educated in a way that prepares them for a shrinking and better educated world. International Education Week, which is coming to Toledo, is designed to do just that.
International Education Week
International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, highlights and celebrates the benefits of international education, studying abroad, and student-exchange programs. As the world gets smaller and the American economy becomes more and more intertwined with that of the global community, it becomes more and more important for the country to focus on educating its young people in a way that prepares them for life in a global economy.
The program encourages any person or institution - from schools to embassies - interested in international education to hold IEW events in their local communities. Official activities begin on November 12, with the release of Open Doors, an annual survey that explores students studying abroad. IEW is celebrated across America and in more than 100 countries.
The University of Toledo
According to the University of Toledo, Dr. Sammy Spann, assistant provost for the university's Center for International Studies and Programs states that, "UT and the Center for International Studies and Programs are proud to celebrate International Education Week! The University of Toledo supports the internationalization and exchange efforts on our campus. Students, faculty, and staff are all encouraged to participate and recognize this important week of programming in celebration of the global village."
Something for Everyone
The University of Toledo is hosting a wide range of events, seminars, and programs for International Education Week, which runs November 11 to 15. You can check out their calendar of events, and even submit to have your institution's event added to the list. The schedule includes celebrations of international cuisine, language, and style; international photographs; and even help with passports. There are many seminars and programs on traveling internationally, hooking up with programs to study abroad or for student exchange.
International Education Week is a global initiative based in the local community - and Toledo is a community that takes it seriously. If you're part of a school or an educational institution, don't hesitate to participate. If you're a student, do yourself and your community a favor and get involved.
