The Toledo Zoo's Lights Before Christmas

If you're looking for an amazing way to usher in the coming of the holiday season and you live in the Toledo area, stop by the Toledo Zoo. From mid-November to the end of December, you'll have the chance to view the spectacular "Lights Before Christmas" display.

What Is It?

This annual family-friendly festival is a fantastic way to celebrate the holiday season. The zoo is festooned with over one million lights and more than 200 illuminated images.

In addition to the stunning display, guests also have the opportunity to partake in a variety of Christmas activities.
The image of so many twinkling lights is enough to put anyone in the holiday spirit. Add to that the strolling carolers, a visit with Santa, and some sweet treats and you are sure to experience the magic of the season.

Additional Activities

Viewing the lights is only part of the fun at the "Lights Before Christmas." Visitors can also partake in these family-fun festivities:

  • Ice Skating: Enjoy skating at the ice rink, which is open every day at 3pm. You can bring your own skates or rent a pair for a nominal fee.
  • Festival Feast at the Holiday Lodge: You and your loved ones will enjoy an unforgettable feast, complete with a story read by Mrs. Claus and a meeting with Ellie the Elf. A chance to meet a zoo animal, a craft activity, and a group photo opp round out this amazing experience.
  • Santa Paws Workshop: Make a gift for your furry loved one at the Workshop in Nature's Neighborhood.

Things to Know

"Lights Before Christmas" runs from mid-November to the end of December each year. In 2013, operating dates are November 15 - December 31. It is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day.

Hours of operation: 3pm-8pm Sunday - Thursday and 3pm-9pm Friday and Saturday

Interesting Information

  • In addition to the more than one million lights on display, the piece de resistance is the towering 85-foot Norway Spruce that is dressed in dazzling LED lights.
  • Decorating begins in September.
  • It takes two months to break down the festival.
  • There have been nearly 200,000 visitors in attendance at one time.
