Feast Your Eyes on a Classic with Arsenic and Old Lace
Come join the fun on November 8th through the 10th and November 14th through the 17th at the Toledo Repertoire Theater at 16 10th Street for a delightful theatrical performance of Arsenic and Old Lace.
Arsenic and Old Lace is the comedic story of Mortimer Brewster, a drama critic who discovers that his two lovable spinster aunts are homicidal. Worse, poor old Mortimer learns on his wedding day that insanity is a trait that runs in the family.
Trying to explain to his aunts why homicide is not okay, while attempting to protect them from the law, results in hilarity and confusion fit for the Toledo stage. In his efforts to aid and defend his incompetent relatives, Mortimer becomes an unwilling accomplice to their crazy actions, putting him and any future with his innocent bride at risk.
At its heart, Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedic of family love, loyalty, and the pondering of how far we are willing to go to protect the ones we love.
The Toledo Repertoire Theatre's comedy of Arsenic and Old Lace is written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Rosie Best.
Joseph Kesselring was an American playwright who achieved fame with Arsenic and Old Lace. The play was originally called Bodies in our Cellar, which aptly describes the problem Mortimer must address during the play. Kesselring went on to write several more plays, some of which were performed on Broadway - but none surpassed the pinnacle of success of Arsenic and Old Lace.
Arsenic and Old Lace was made famous on the silver screen when Cary Grant starred as Mortimer Brewster in 1944. Frank Capra directed the feature film that also starred Priscilla Lane and a young Raymond Massey.
Arsenic and Old Lace at the Toledo Repertoire Theater is performed by special arrangement with the Dramatists' Play Service, Inc. of New York.
