#GivingTuesday
The Arts Commission has joined #GivingTuesday, a first of its kind effort that harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners — charities, families, businesses, and individuals — to transform how people think about, talk about, and participate in the giving season. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world. Taking place December 3, 2013 — the Tuesday after Thanksgiving — #GivingTuesday embraces the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.
Our Campaign
This year, The Arts Commission has a #GivingTuesday goal of raising $3,000 for our Young Artists at Work (YAAW) program. Since 1994, the YAAW program has inspired Toledo-area youth by hiring diverse high school-aged students for an intensive six-week paid summer apprenticeship in the arts that teaches job skills and diverse artistic techniques through creative projects. The program is designed to impact the students through adulthood and to foster positive interactions with the community through public art projects.
In addition to the visual art aspect of YAAW, student apprentices participate in a workshop to broaden appreciation for literary and performing arts. Each year, a clinician is hired to lead the students through a non-visual arts discipline. Past projects have included writing poems to be featured on area transit buses through the Art in TARTA program, participating in an African drumming workshop, and writing, staging, and presenting a theatrical production for the general community from the ground up. Funds earned through The Arts Commission's 2013 #GivingTuesday campaign will be used to hire a performing and literary arts clinician for the 2014 year, which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of this award-winning program. Your donation can help change the lives of several teens in Toledo, many who have never before been exposed to the arts, many whose first job this will be, and many whose families depend on this summer income.
