PRIZM "No Mic Night" Author Support Group at Way Library
Way Public Library and PRIZM Creative Community will be hosting “No Mic Night”, a monthly author support group beginning January 16, 2014. The community is invited to participate in these regular support and inspiration gatherings for the literary arts. On the third Thursday of each month from 7-9 p.m., authors will meet at the Way Public Library. The library is located at 101 E Indiana Ave, in Perrysburg. Please note, meetings on January 16th and February 20th will be from 6:30-8:30 pm in the library’s Mercy Family Activity Center. Meetings from March 20th through December 18th will be from 7-9 pm on the lower level of the library.
This discussion group has been named “No Mic Night” to express the relaxed nature of the evening. Each month includes peer review, useful feedback, and tips for getting published, all within an informal atmosphere. The group will be guided by facilitators with experience in creative writing including published author and professor of Creative Writing, Lylanne Musselman, who currently serves on the PRIZM Board of Directors.
Participants can expect to receive motivation, inspiration, and new skills by connecting with other writers and authors. Each month will provide an informal forum for both new and experienced writers to share, discuss, and receive feedback on their original writing projects. There will also be opportunities for participants to read their writing to the public on an “Open Mic Night” at the April 17th and October 16th meetings.
“No Mic Night”, which enters its third year this January, joins the Way Public Library family of programming with a stimulating and interesting schedule for 2014. Guest facilitator for the January 16th meeting will be author Harley King of Perrysburg. King holds a B.A. degree in English, and has been writing and publishing poetry for over 38 years. He spent 7 years writing only haiku and hosted a Broadway Bards poetry reading in Toledo for five years. He has published 12 books of poetry and 2 works of non-fiction. He currently writes a weekly motivational blog for creative leaders and is a moderator on Google+ for a poetry group.
King has been gainfully employed in a variety of interesting positions over the years. He will share how rich and varied experiences from your life can be inspiration for your writing, and also provide tidbits from his publishing experiences followed by peer review.
Those who would like to participate in optional at home/ pre-class writing exercises and writing prompts for potential inspiration are encouraged to join the PRIZM “No Mic Night” email distribution list to receive this information, generally distributed at least two weeks prior to each meeting. Simply email [email protected] with your name, phone number, and email, and NO MIC NIGHT in the subject line to be added to the communication list.
“No Mic Nights” are free and open to the public and new members are always welcome. If you would like peer feedback about a current writing project bring a dozen copies of a sample to share. Please bring paper, pencil or digital media for note taking or potential writing exercises that may be a part of the evening dialogue.
