Zombies In July: Actors Give Mud Run A New Meaning!
As promised, the land was wet, the route muddy and the obstacles were extreme at the 1st Annual Lake Eerie Zombie Mud Run 5k – Obstacle Course. The unique race is returning to Erie Metroparks in Sandusky, Ohio. Halloween is coming early this year, on July 12, 2014, the zombies are attacking! The race takes runners knee-high through the beautiful, yet muddy shores of Lake Erie.
The 1st Lake Eerie Zombie Mud Run had runners “dying” to take part in the action. The race took place last September and received rave reviews from hundreds of participants near and far! Runner and fitness guru, Adam Pummer, traveled from Mokena, Illinois to test his strength and agility only to be deamed “infected" by the time he crossed the finish line. Runners (wearing flag-football style flags) dodge the grotesque zombies trying to steal all three flags thereby infecting them with their sickness. Anyone who finishes the race with at least one flag receieves a "Survivor" Medal of Honor.
Some of the flag hungry zombies are actually actors hand-picked by the event organizers who also host a haunted house which has been recognized by FORBES as A Top Ten Great Haunted Attraction in 2013, and has been featured on The Travel Channel’s “Best Places I’ve Ever Been”. Coordinator Billy Criscione says, “The zombies play multiple roles, some are meant to chase runners down to capture a flag while others are primarily placed to lurk and scare runners when they least expect it.” The Lake Eerie Zombie Mud Run is sure to reflect heart pumping excitement and hold true to the organization’s "thrilling" reputation. “If scaring people is more your style, you can sign up to be a zombie instead of a runner,” laughs Criscione.
Pummer, who competed as a gymnast at University of Illinois, said “Lake Eerie Zombie Mud Run was the perfect combination of fun and obstacles. My favorite obstacle had me nervously running across a balance beam while water sprayed up at my face from under me!” Participants can race solo or organize a team. Pummer raced with a friend from Cleveland, Ohio, Ryan Finn, to strategize and aid one another during obstacles, especially while evading zombies. Pummer and Finn have already registered for the upcoming race being held at Erie Metroparks on July 12, 2014.
Zombies, runners, volunteers and spectators can sign up online. Registration for the Lake Zombie Mud Run takes place at www.lakeeeriezombiemudrun.com.
The earlier participants register, the more money they save on the registration price. The race is July 12 at East Sandusky Bay MetroPark, 3401 Cleveland Road in Sandusky, Ohio.
