Launch Pad Cooperative is please to present an artist talk with current Launch Pad exhibiting artist, Casey Jex Smith, Saturday February 8, 2014 at 7:00 PM. In addition to discussing his work, Casey will share the successful steps he took to gain gallery representation and the circumstances of how he lost the representation. He will also discuss his experience working with non-profits and how relationships with galleries work.
Casey Jex Smith is an artist that works in drawing, collage, installation, and performance. He creates narratives that exist in the intersection between fantasy-gaming, religion, and modernist abstraction. He has exhibited at the Drawing Center, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, The Lab, Josée Bienvenu Gallery, Allegra LaViola Gallery, Galerie Polaris, and Nudashank. He received a BFA in Painting from Brigham Young University and an MFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. His current body of work deals with the idea of powerlessness. Where is power stored, who holds the keys, and how can an individual break in and take a portion. Smith says about his own work, "Role-play gaming and religious rituals give me systems where I can simulate the regaining of power and understand where it resides in the metaphysical. The art world gives me a place to create the illusion of power when I have complete control over a white rectangle (paper) or white box (gallery) for an evening."
Casey Jex Smith has new drawings and video currently on display for "Voices and Visions”. "Voices and Visions” will be on display January 10, 2014 - February 21, 2014, with a closing reception February 21 at 7pm.
