Posted: Thursday, February 27, 2014 by: Rose Mills | Category: Events

Way Public Library is pleased to announce the speaker lineup for our inaugural TEDx event. We believe that a library is an excellent forum for sharing ideas and gaining inspiration. Our mission in hosting a TEDx event is to get our community motivated. The theme for the event is “A Community of Ideas” and we want to tap our community – local and national – for speakers and attendees who have ideas and inspiration.

The event will take place at the Way Public Library in Perrysburg, Ohio on April 12, 2014 from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Tickets go on sale March 1st and will be $35. For more information about the event, please visit www.tedxwaypubliclibrary.com .
The following speakers are confirmed for the event. A fifth speaker will be announced in the next few days. These speakers will give the talk of their lives and share their innovative thinking and inspirational spirit with event attendees.

Greg Gage is a DIY neuroscientist and TED Fellow. During grad school, he co-founded a company called Backyard Brains, which develops lessons and experiments to teach “electrophysiology” from middle school on up. Mr. Gage wants to increase the public’s understanding of neuroscience, create a community of amateur neuroscientists, and usher in the next generation of neuroscientists.

Thomas L. Hosler became the superintendent of Perrysburg on August 1, 2007. Mr. Hosler has served in a variety of leadership roles both locally and at the state level. Since joining Perrysburg Schools, he now serves on the Executive Boards of the Ft. Meigs YMCA, Owens Community College Foundation, Alliance for High Quality Education, Perrysburg Schools Foundation and Downtown Perrysburg, Inc.

C.R. Kasprzyk is a composer who also works with electronics, saxophone, video, and in free-improvisation. Deeply informed by his life as a vegan, he strives for an intangible parallel between a cognizance of one’s surrounding and work transcribed from (or inspired by) that environment. Kasprzyk’s work has garnered performance credits including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Steinway Hall, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC), and others throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Currently, Kasprzyk is pursuing his doctorate at Bowling Green State University.

Ken Leslie is the founder of 1Matters.org, a national nonprofit supported by John Mellencamp, Dusty Hill, ZZ Top, Kix Brooks and others in the music industry working to house the unhoused. Ken, a formerly homeless alcoholic/addict has spent the past 25 clean and sober years building a successful recruiting firm and as a philanthropist funding new programs designed to provide financial and domestic autonomy for those on the streets.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California almost 30 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world's leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes on a diverse mix of topics. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The TED2014 Conference will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia, along with the TEDActive simulcast in neighboring Whistler. TEDGlobal 2014 will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; and TEDBooks, short e-books on powerful ideas. TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world get help translating their wishes into action; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
