MVCDS Issue Day 2014 - Art in Society
On Friday, March 7th from 8:00am to 3:00pm, Maumee Valley Country Day School’s Upper School students will be hosting their annual Issue Day.
Issue Day is an event put on every year by the junior class. Each year, the class chooses a topic that they see as relevant and meaningful to the modern day world. Committees are established to cover logistics, marketing, and finding speakers. Speakers are always knowledgeable and well versed on the topic, while also ranging in a variety of professions and points of view, and provide listeners with insight on the topic and how it affects the world today.
This year, Maumee Valley Country Day School’s class of 2015 has decided to host an Issue Day centralized around art and how art connects to various aspects of life. Not only is the topic unconventional compared to those done in past years, but so is the overall presentation. The opening speaker will be D.W. Gregory, the playwright of this year’s fall play Radium Girls.
“When we decided this year’s topic to for Issue Day was going to be art, we knew we had to do something different,” said Asma Elgamal ‘15, the Special Projects chair, “Simply doing the conventional four-workshop deal didn’t cut it for us. We knew, since the topic lent itself to several creative outlets and can be interpreted in multiple ways, that in order to do the topic justice, we had to show that in some way.”
At Issue Day this year, the juniors have replaced the traditional closing speaker with a final showcase of several performing and visual arts. There will be an art gallery, a theater performance, a solo guitarist, a local filmmaker, and a dance team. “Each exhibit will offer a visual or interactive portion as well as the opportunity to speak directly with the performers to understand their field and what it means to them,” Asma explained.
Visitors and students will be invited to walk around and see the various exhibits around the Upper School. The art gallery will be located in the Million Auditorium composed of work from 15 different artists.
In the Millenium Theater, Maumee Valley Country Day School cast and crew of this year’s spring musical Hairspray will be putting on their performance of the song Without Love in the Millennium Theater. Starring Anne Deichert ‘14, Rachel Bryan ‘14, William Cagle ‘15, and Adrian Hicks ‘16 and directed by Kevin Hayes with musical direction by Charles Brown. Both teachers will be present afterwards to talk about the process of putting on a show, and their experience working with young artists.
Tim Ide, a local filmmaker, will be presenting a showcase of his work in the K-Center. Ide’s work is renowned for capturing “the real Toledo.” His most recent project was a film called, Miserable City, which served as a rebuttal to a magazine article’s claim that named Toledo one of the most miserable cities in the United States by capturing the vivacious artistic scene of Toledo on film. At Issue Day, Tim Ide will present his footage of Toledo as well as speak with guests about his work.
Kyle Transel will be at Issue Day representing his band, The Shame Game. Transel will be performing his own songs and talking to visitors about his life as a musician.
The juniors are also bringing in the Southview Cougarette Dance Team to perform three of their competition pieces. The teams as well as their coach Adrienne Salon will be found in the Upper School Gym.
Issue Day 2014 is free and open to the public.
