Veterans Matter houses 200th veteran, Mitch Albom donates $15k for Michigan Veterans
(TOLEDO) - Veterans Matter announced today it has housed its 200th veteran nationwide. The group operates in five U.S. regions. Locally, sixty-five veterans have been housed by the program, thanks to the support of Promedica and the Lucas County Veterans Services Commission.
In addition, Detroit Free Press columnist and New York Times bestselling author Mitch Albom seeded the program’s Operation Michigan last week with a donation of $15,000, and will serve as the groups Michigan Co-Chair. What started as a small volunteer solution to solve a local problem has grown to house veterans in five regions, and has included the support of Hall of Fame musicians such as Dusty Hill of ZZ Top, John Mellencamp, and Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn. To date, more than $200,000 has been raised for the campaign.
“This is growing so fast because it is simple: it gets our heroes off the streets, like right now!” said Ken Leslie, the founder of Veterans Matter.
Here is the breakdown of veterans housed by region:
Operation Hometown: 65
Operation Texas: 114
Operation New England: 9
Operation Indiana: 9
Operation Michigan: 3

“We take care of our own!” Mr. Leslie said.
Last month, Kix Brooks joined Veterans Matter as the Operation Tennessee co-chair to raise funds for that state’s unhoused veterans. Brooks, along with other artists and celebrities, will lend their voices to radio public service announcements which will run nationally from Armed Forces Day, May 17, to Memorial Day.
A benefit will take place this Sunday, April 6, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Forrester’s on the River in Toledo. “Coming Home” is a benefit to help house more Veterans nationwide. Performing will be The Good, The Bad, & The Blues, The Joe Baker Band, The Reese Dailey Band, The Grape Smugglers, with special appearances by Ramona Collins, Candice Coleman, Pat Lewandowski, and others! Tickets are available at the door. Those who cannot attend but want to help can text “vets” to 41444 to make a contribution of any amount on a credit or debit card.
