Visual arts teacher Lydia Horvath has been selected to receive a $5,000 Fellowship from the National Artist Teacher Fellowship program. Toledo School for the Arts, where Horvath has taught for 7 years, also has been awarded a complementary grant of $1,500 to support her post- fellowship activities in the school.
Formerly known as the Surdna Arts Teachers Fellowship (SATF), the National Artist Teacher Fellowship (NATF) program is a grant that supports the artistic revitalization of arts teachers, offering them the opportunity to immerse themselves in their own creative work, interact with other professional artists, and stay current with new practices. NATF is generously supported by the Surdna Foundation and is a program of the Center for Arts in Education at Boston Arts Academy.
The National Artist Teacher Fellowship program recently announced Fellowship recipients for the fourteenth round of its national awards.
The teachers excel in a broad spectrum of visual, performing, and literary arts.
Award recipients were evaluated by a peer review panel based on demonstrated excellence both as artists and teachers. All permanently assigned, full- and part-time arts faculty in eligible middle and high schools were invited to submit applications.
Horvath plans to use the money to attend a printmaking course on combining image and word at Ox- Bow in Saugatuck, Michigan, and to rent an art studio in Toledo’s Davis Building. Post-Fellowship funds will be used to purchase a letterpress for use by TSA staff and students. “I am so excited to be expanding my creative range into printmaking and creative writing. I think this will open some great opportunities to integrate visual art and writing both for myself and for TSA students,” said Horvath.
Horvath is engaged deeply in TSA. In visual arts, she teaches students of varied grade levels and abilities in Studio Art 1, Studio Art 2, and Art Around the World, and two sections of Intro to Art for incoming 6th graders. She has led TSA Outreach efforts to provide students with business experience through area gigs in caricature drawing and face painting. A long-time advisor of the TSA Artisans’ Guild, Horvath recently handed that baton to another staff member to instead become EIC Chair. This position is voted on by the entirety of the staff and the elected chair serves as a voice for our faculty at the Board table. In her personal artistic endeavors, Horvath is always busy. She regularly seeks out professional and educational opportunities, most recently having studied with TICA in Chicago and been selected for an exhibition at OU among the most talented arts instructors in the state. Horvath exhibits regularly in the area, and was chosen for a group show with Anthony Dixon, Nikki Eggerstorfer and Isaac Klunk this fall in TSA’s Gallerie 333.
