Join Lourdes' mental health student group
On Thursday, May 8, Lourdes University’s chapter of Active Minds, the voice of mental health awareness for young adults nationwide, is hosting a Night without Stigma. Co-sponsored by Lourdes Social Science Club, the free event will take place at 6 p.m. in the Franciscan Center, and features national speaker Janelle Montaño.
After Janelle Montaño lost her brother Josh to suicide, she spent years suffering in silence without adequate support and coping mechanisms. Since seeking the treatment she needed, Janelle has brought her life back into balance. As a speaker, Janelle acknowledges the reality of mental health disorders, but emphasizes her belief that everyone can live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives when they receive the treatment that is right for them. As an advocate, she emphasizes everyone’s role in creating communities where people feel safe in speaking up and receiving help for their mental health.
Last June, Janelle was selected to introduce President Barrack Obama and serve on a speaker panel moderated by Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the historic White House Conference on Mental Health. In her opening statements, she shared her story about family suicide, depression, hope, and recovery by advocating through Active Minds. In addition to speaking engagements throughout the nation, Janelle is also an alumna of The Ohio State University and works as a certified yoga and reiki coach.
