Fun and Games for All Ages at 49th Annual German-American Festival
TOLEDO, Ohio, Aug. 13, 2014—The German-American Festival is the perfect place for fun, games, laughter and a little competition. This year’s festival takes place Aug. 22-24 at Oak Shade Grove in Oregon, Ohio.
“We try to provide as many entertainment opportunities as possible at the Festival. It’s really important to us that there are enough options that all of the attendees are able to have fun,” explained Tim Pecsenye, Festival Chairman.
The opening ceremony is something that you definitely do not want to miss. It features colorful costumes and pageantry that are paraded through the festival grounds.
If you are looking for a little friendly competition, you can participate in these events throughout the festival:
• How fast can you eat soft pretzels? Join the Brezelessen (a pretzel eating contest) in the Hofbrauhalle on Saturday at 9:00 p.m.
• How well can you hold your beer? It’s simple, lift and hold a 1 liter stein filled with beer straight out on your arm parallel to the ground. The current U.S. record is 14 minutes and 7 seconds. Contest starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
• Want to test your strength? In the Swiss Steintossen, an old Swiss stone-throwing contest, men and women throw stones in a designated area to see who can throw the furthest. Contest starts at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, no pre-entry required.
• The Hummel Look-Alike contest is for children ages 2-10. They are welcomed to dress up as their favorite Hummel characters on Sunday afternoon, with prizes being awarded for every age level. Pre-registration required.
• How fast can you eat 8 ounces of Swiss cheese? Test your abilities on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the Swiss Essen Haus.
• If you have an old world kuchen recipe that you think is simply the best, submit your baked good along with the recipe to the German Baking Contest. It is at the Sidewalk Café on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
• Soccer games will occur on Saturday
• And many more exciting competitions and events!
There will be face painting and clowns on Saturday and Sunday along with many amusement rides to choose from. Some of the rides are bumper cars, paratrooper, funhouse, sizzler, merry-go-round, tilt-a-whirl and many more for children and the young at heart.
The German-American Festival will be held at Oak Shade Grove, Oregon, Ohio, on Friday, Aug. 22- 6:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.; Saturday, Aug. 23- 2:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 24- Noon-11:00 p.m. General admission is $8.00 per person.
