49th Annual German-American Festival Hosts Baking Contest With Prizes

TOLEDO, Ohio, Aug. 13, 2014—If you love to bake and have an amazing recipe that you are dying to show off, then you do not want to miss this years’ German Kuchen Baking Contest at the German-American Festival. The festival will be held at Oak Shade Grove in Oregon, Ohio from Aug. 22-24. The baking contest will take place on Saturday, 3:30 p.m. at the Sidewalk Café.

“The German Kuchen Baking Contest is a great opportunity for amazing bakers to show off their skills. We look forward to the delicious dishes that are presented every year,” explained Diane Schmidt. “We even invite the festival attendees to get involved as unofficial taste testers, it’s a lot of fun.”

All that you have to do to enter the contest is submit your old world Kuchen baked good and recipe on the day of the event. A panel of food connoisseurs, including Mary Bilyeu, Food Editor of The Blade, Joe Kiss, Owner and Operator of Maumee Bay General Store, and Art Richardson Owner of the Oregon Inn will judge these delicious baked items.

There are some wonderful prizes that members of the community have so generously donated. First, second and third place winners will be presented with prizes such as a Sunoco gas card, a gift certificate to Venturas, and a nail service at Future Wave. Once the winners have been determined and the prizes presented, the goods will be sold to the public. Even if you are not participating in the contest, be sure to make your way to the Sidewalk Café to get your hands on some of these surely amazing baked goods.

The German-American Festival will be held at Oak Shade Grove, Oregon, Ohio, on Friday, Aug. 22- 6:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.; Saturday, Aug. 23- 2:00 p.m.-1:00 a.m.; and Sunday, Aug. 24- Noon-11:00 p.m. General admission is $8.00 per person. Children 12 years of age and under are admitted at no charge when with an adult or guardian.

About the German-American Festival: The Festival is operated by GAF Society, which is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It is sponsored by the seven German- and Swiss-American societies in Toledo, and is intended to promote and enhance the German and Swiss cultures, as well as generate revenue to support the German and Swiss cultural center in Oregon, along with a variety of scholarship, athletic and philanthropic programs in the Toledo area.
