The Two Faces of Africa
Photographing the African Experience –
from Africa to Toledo
An accomplished wildlife photographer with experience working with National Geographic magazine and the Los Angeles Times, Ed Conn has had the opportunity to explore exotic lands and create awe-inspiring photographs.
Conn recently returned to the U.S. after visiting and photographing Africa’s Big Five Game (the African lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, African leopard and White/Black rhinoceros). He also had a similar experience as a volunteer with the Toledo Zoo where he photographed the Zoo’s Africa! Exhibit. He finds many similarities between the two experiences.
“The Toledo Zoo’s exhibits are designed to give excellent sightlines for the visitors,” Conn said. “A patient photographer with some good light can get wonderful photos there.”
Conn and other photographers in the region are planning African Photo Safari workshops on location at the Toledo Zoo in the coming months. Participants will be able to have early access to the Zoo, and get guidance from the professional photographers while they’re shooting. They will complete their safari by gathering and sharing their experiences with the group.
Conn recently spent some time in the Toledo Zoo’s Africa! Exhibit, and was able to photograph over a dozen African animals. “The morning sun glowed nicely on the white-bearded wildebeest,” he said. “The cheetah was beginning to go through its morning paces, and the white rhino was being its usual surly self on the top of its hill. All in all, it was a wonderful experience.”
Conn will be exhibiting his photographs from his trip to Africa during September. The exhibit, “The Two Faces of Africa,” will be on display at Pam’s Corner restaurant in Downtown Toledo’s Davis Building. An opening reception is scheduled for Sept. 17 at 6 p.m.
“You would think that working for National Geographic magazine for over a decade would prepare me for the African experience,” he said. “But I was touched by the beauty, awed by the rawness and humbled by the natural magic of the country.”He participated in a 30-day, three-country trip that combined travel and photography with a Habitat For Humanity build.
