Toledo Zoo Offers Enrichment Day on Sept. 27
One of the ways that the Toledo Zoo provides excellent animal care is through its animal enrichment: objects and activities that encourage the animals to use their natural smarts to explore, make decisions and find food. On Saturday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Zoo offers Enrichment Day so visitors can see these efforts in action, from animal feeds to enrichment demonstrations and up-close animal encounters.
In Tembo Trail, did you know that the elephants get baths every day, the hippos love having watermelons tossed right into their Hippoquarium®, and the otters’ favorite treat is clamshells that they can break apart in just a few seconds?
Nearby, it’s no secret that Baru, the Zoo’s massive saltwater crocodile brought to Toledo by Block Communications Inc., came to the Zoo with a big taste for beef. But keepers have been encouraging him to eat more of a “heart healthy” diet, and you can be among the first visitors to see him chow down in public (don’t blink or you’ll miss it!).
All across the Zoo, keepers will share enrichment demonstrations and information about the animals, from little meerkats to huge gorillas. The day even features a live animal show in Nature’s Neighborhood and a free-flight bird show in the Museum of Science, all included with regular Zoo admission.
While you’re at the Zoo, don’t miss the all-new Flamingo Key, Penguin Beach and ‘Keet Retreat. Flamingo Key shows off the “avian supermodels” back at the Zoo for the first time in decades. Near Primate Forest, Penguin Beach leads you right through the penguins’ exhibit. Just a couple minutes away, by the Zoo’s Broadway entrance, ‘Keet Retreat offers a fun walk-through encounter with these bright, friendly little birds.
Visitor experiences like these are just some of the reasons the Toledo Zoo is rated the #1 zoo in the nation by USA Today Travel, and among the top ten family attractions nationwide by FamilyFun Magazine. More information is at toledozoo.org.
