The University of Toledo Department of Communication hosts “Banned Books Vigil” as part of national “Banned Books Week”

What do “To Kill a Mocking Bird” (Harper Lee), “The Color Purple” (Alice Walker), “Harry Potter” [series] (J.K. Rowling), “The Catcher in the Rye” (J.D. Salinger), and “Captain Underpants” [series] (Dav Pilkey) all have in common? Classic reads? They are, but they are also books that were banned in some way.

The week of September 21-27 is national Banned Books Week, a celebration of the freedom of expression, even when the ideas expressed are thought to be unconventional and challenge prevailing social thought. The University of Toledo Department of Communication, in cooperation with UT’s libraries, is sharing in this celebration by hosting the annual Banned Books Vigil, Thursday, September 25.

A major aspect of the Banned Books Vigil, a free event, is the series of 20-minute presentations throughout the day, during which speakers will focus on some way in which the freedom of expression has been trampled upon – from Nazi book burnings to present-day school districts which ban classic, but perhaps unorthodox works from their library shelves and classrooms. Books that have been banned in some setting or another will be given away as door prizes, and free refreshments will be served.

The attached flyer provides a list of the books that might be given away at the event. Those interested in donating books or funds to the event are encouraged to contact Paulette Kilmer (see contact info below) or contact Colleen Strayer at the UT Bookstore, 1430 Secor Road. Call 419-530-2516 or email toledo@bkstore.com.

This event is free and open to the public. Banned Books Week is a presentation of the American Library Association. http://www.ala.org/bbooks/bannedbooksweek Visit the UT Department of Communication at http://www.utoledo.edu/comm-arts/communication/
