WORKSHOP: PAINTING WITH ENCAUSTICS II: ADVANCED METHODS

4. Encaustic monotyping
5. New method in creating the encaustic surface.

ART JOURNALING WORKSHOP: WORD & IMAGE

A travel watercolor set, Cottonwood designer sketch book, and micron pen are included materials that you will get to keep included in the price of this class!
In Word and Image, students will examine the interplay of the written word along with the drawn image to explore the possibilities of the illustrated journal. If you love to write and sketch, learn to combine them to create journals that are works of art in themselves. Whether you are interested in recording your travels, what grows in your garden, or just the activity at your favorite cafe, learn to create an artful record of daily life. In the words of journal keeper and artist Hannah Hinchman "images and words catalyze each other.

WORKSHOP: INTRODUCTION TO BOOK MAKING

Learn how to make the most traditional book in Western culture: a hard case book with a sewn signature (hardcover book with inside pages sewn together at the spine). Your finished book will measure 9x12" and can be used as a journal, sketchbook, scrapbook ... or whatever your imagination can dream up.
No previous experience in book arts necessary. This class is for anyone 16 and up who is interested in making books. Beginners with no experience, to well-seasoned and professional book makers are all welcome to attend.
Some materials, supplies, and tools will be provided for in-class use. Katie will also distribute illustrated hand-outs that make it easy to re-create the style of book demonstrated in class at home.

Students should bring or buy one sheet of acid-free decorative paper for the cover of their book. The sheet should measure at least 14x22." Students should also bring or buy a piece of book cloth that is at least 5x14" long. Book cloth is available for sale at the Depo.

Decorative paper sheets range in cost form $.85 to $9.25 in a range of styles,
patterns, and colors. We have 30+ styles of awesome decorative paper in the store for purchase and many are on super sale.

Katie Delay is our queen of "All Things Books" and it is our pleasure to offer another of her classes at The Depo. Come and bring a friend! We promise you'll enjoy your afternoon, as well as learn a new book making technique that you can easily re-create at home.

CLASS: DRAWING THE HANDS & FEET

$95 for the class / drop-ins for individual sessions are also welcome. $40 per session.
Three consecutive Tuesdays starting November 4th through the 18th. From 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Dig deep into your figure drawing studies and get a good handle on how to draw our furthest extremities. All skill levels are welcome!

This class will cover the head, hands and feet in the context of figure drawing. Drawing the head, hands & feet is a lesson in proportion & perception. We will have an hour of lecture and 2 hours of drawing with a live model, bone studies & lessons.

Participants should bring a large newsprint or drawing pad, and a selection of earthtone prismacolor colored pencils.

ACRYLIC PAINTING

Four Wednesdays, November 8th through the 29th from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
Instructor: Paul Brand
Mature teens + adults. For absolute beginner, intermediate, and advanced painters.

Learn the fundamentals of color, composition, and handling paint and materials to create a successful painting.

First session: Basics of color mixing. Mixing colors with a limited palette; effect of white on other colors. Make a reference color chart of primary, secondary and tertiary colors. Practice matching color samples.

Second Session: Starting a simple painting. Learn how to use brushes and medium with acrylics. Choosing a subject and sketching it on the canvas. Select colors and begin painting, starting with the background and working toward the fore ground.

Third session: Continuing the picture. Light direction, shadow, and getting a three dimensional appearance. Elementary perspective as it applies to your picture. Completing your picture.

Fourth session: Putting it together. Create a second painting by selecting a subject, learning to emphasize the center of interest and adding attractive details.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different brushes? They vary in size, shape, texture, and material. There are reasons! If you feel confused when selecting brushes, or if you're curious about how to improve and refine your technique by using the most effective brush style, come and unlock the enigma of brushes!

Learn useful tips on selecting, cleaning, and maintaining brushes. Understand the difference between synthetic, natural, water media, oil, flats, filberts, angled, riggers, cat's tongue, rounds, etc. Learn how to use each brush to your advantage.

ACRYLIC LANDSCAPE PAINTING: FOCUS ON THE SKY

In this fun, informative, and hands-on class, Mary will teach students how easy it can be to create a beautiful landscape scene with easy to clean-up acrylic paints. Students will get step-by step demonstration and instruction on how to paint the landscape elements of their choice, such as: clouds, mountains, trees, grass, water, and barns. The primary focus of this class will be on creating a realistic and intriguing sky-scape, as in the featured "sunset" photo to the left.

This is an exceptionally fun and relaxing class with no artistic skills necessary. Any age can participate, including kids and teens. Make a beautiful, hand-printed, one of a kind scarf for yourself or as a gift. Use new, old, or recycled t-shirts.
Everyone who takes this class loves it and wants to do it again!

The class will begin with a demonstration, and then students will get to work creating their own hand-printed scarves. Students can also create a hand-printed t-shirt. Students should bring their own t-shirts. For making a scarf, they'll need one or two extra-large sized t-shirts. For making a t-shirt, they'll need the size that they wear, or the size of the person they're making it for. T-shirts can be any color, old, recycled, or new.

MAKE A GIFT: PAINT A HOLIDAY ORNAMENT

Paint a 3" round ornament ball to decorate your tree or to give as a gift. Learn how to use different types of brushes and layer ceramic underglazes to achieve brilliant, bold, and beautiful colors on your ornament.

Ornaments will be clear glazed and fired after painting. They will be available for
pick up approximately one week after the session.

This class is for all ages: Children as young as two can participate with help from an adult. Cost is $20 per ornament- if you'd like to paint more than one ornament in the hour 1/2 session, you are welcome to do so.

Suggestion for participants: come with an idea of what you'd like to paint on your ornament. The hardest thing about painting on ceramic is deciding what to paint! We suggest browsing the internet or magazines for images/ inspiration and bringing some sort of reference material with you.

Class is limited to 15 participants. RSVP early to reserve your space.

No artistic skills are needed to show up and have fun beading! Learn simple techniques for all ages. Make a personalized Holiday gift for everyone on your list! Stop by our studio anytime on Tuesday, December 16th from 10am - 7pm and paint pottery! We will stay open late until 9pm to accommodate those who want to stop by after work.
This activity is for all ages: Children as young as two can participate with help from an adult. Cost is per piece. If you'd like to paint more than one item, you are welcome to do so.

If you know in advance what you'd like to paint, please purchase the items in advance online so we can reserve your inventory. Drop-in's are also welcome. Our selection will also include other items not listed, as we're always ordering new ceramic items!

Drawing from a photograph is tricky. A photograph flattens a three dimensional form and distorts that form. Learn simple techniques to bring images back to life when working from photographic references. Improve the quality of your drawing with tips and tricks Debra will share with you.

Students should bring a sketchbook or paper, drawing materials of your choice, and photographic references to draw form.

POP-UP CLASS: IMAGE TRANSFER

Learn photo transfer techniques using acrylic gels and acetone that will intrigue you and open your mind to new possibilities for creating art. After transferring, embellish your work with pastel pencils and other media. View examples of photo transfer work and a variety of papers to work on. This exciting class will inspire you to keep creating new work.

Students must bring multiple laser copies of various images to work from, either colored or black and white. Ink-jet images will not work for this process.

Learn to draw a portrait using simple geometric shapes to establish features such as the nose, lips, and eyes. This process will help anyone improve their ability to draw a three dimensional representation of a face and it is so simple to learn. Build on knowledge you already have and learn to apply that knowledge to drawing a portrait. Students should bring a sketch book and pencils.

CLASS: DRAWING THE HEAD & SHOULDERS

Three consecutive Tuesdays from 6-9PM, February 10-24.

Ages 18+ (serious younger students accepted with parental permission)

This three session drawing class will focus on the head, neck, and shoulder girdle. In each session, Jennifer will present a one hour lecture on anatomical structures followed by two hours of drawing practice from a skeleton or live model.

Class 1: study of skull and shoulder girdle (followed by drawing from a skeleton)
Class 2: study of facial musculature (followed by drawing from a model)
Class 3: study of facial features (followed by drawing from a model)

Students should bring or buy the following supplies:
18x24 paper, Prismacolor pencils (at least two earth color), vine charcoal, 6B General's charcoal stick, erasers or drawing supplies of choice.

A pop-up class takes place in one day for a few hours. It's a fun, inexpensive, and informative studio learning experience.

Learn & experiment with a variety of materials and techniques in this informative class! We’ll use charcoal, Nero oil-based pencils, a variety of markers, & pastel pencils to discover new blending techniques and the uses of and necessity of a variety of erasers. You won’t be disappointed. Students should bring a sketchbook, all other materials provided.
