SPOKEN: An Evening of Toledo Storytelling
The area’s first live storytelling event
TOLEDO, OH – Everyone's got a story to tell. From the epic to the mundane, the details that compose our lives have fascinating potential to move and entertain others. By sharing stories, we share our humanity and connect our human experiences to better see and understand the beauty, tragedy, and comedy that makes us who we are and that draws us together.
On Thursday, March 12 at 6:30pm, Toledoans will gather at the Ohio Theatre and Events Center for a unique night of storytelling at the inaugural Spoken Toledo event. The event will feature four selected Guest Storytellers throughout the evening in addition to tales from audience members who sign up at the door. Names will be pulled at random throughout the event. For those with great stories but perhaps too timid to tell their own tales, a section called “Storytellers Anonymous” will see guest readers convey anonymous stories submitted in advance. Anonymous stories may be emailed in advance of the event to [email protected].
The theme for Spoken is “Beginnings and Endings.” Tickets are $5 each and on sale now at bit.ly/SpokenToledo.
“This is an exciting event for Toledo,” said Ryan A. Bunch, one of the event organizers, “For fans of The Moth Radio Hour and other storytelling programs, this will be an unique local version of those types of programs. Storytelling events are becoming more popular across the country. To us, it’s about gathering people together and sharing our human experiences, and about being open, honest, and connected, no matter how embarrassing or funny or heartbreaking those experiences may be. In our increasingly digital worlds, these kinds of very human connects seem to be more and more sought after. This venue is so appropriate for that too. These old neighborhood theatres existed as places for the community to gather and catch up on news, movies, and chit-chat with other neighbors and community leaders. Not only are we hosting a fresh new event for Toledo, we are reviving the spirit of a near 100 year old community gathering place as well.”
The public is invited to join in for a unique evening of stories, a few laughs, maybe some tears, and a celebration of life in the Glass City. Guest Storytellers include Rhonda Sewell, Leonard Kress, and Erin Keaton. All audience members are eligible to share their stories as well, there will be a sign up form at the door.
RSVP on Facebook at bit.ly/SpokenToledoFB.
Please Note: Some stories may contain sensitive material. This event is for ages 18+, minors should be accompanied by an adult at the adult’s discretion. No refunds will be provided based on content of performances.
