Twenty employees from the General Motors Toledo Engineering group will plant trees Friday afternoon for Arbor Day at Wiregrass Lake, a new Metropark set to open this spring in Spencer Township.

GM Toledo Transmission Operations also donated $3,485 to purchase the 18 pin oak, swamp white oak, black gum and hackberry trees that they will plant.

“The local community that many of our employees and their families call home, is important to the General Motors Toledo Transmission plant,” said Joe Choate, plant manager at Toledo Transmission. “We are very proud to have the opportunity to partner with the Metroparks of the Toledo Area on the reforestation project.”
Last year, the Toledo Engineering group planted seedling trees at the Fallen Timbers Battlefield in Maumee.

About Wiregrass Lake

The planting will help reforest part of the property, which has a large, scenic lake that will be available to the public for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The park will also feature a picnic shelter and three campsites, which will provide a secluded, primitive camping experience.

Wiregrass Lake will be the first new Metropark area to open within the Oak Openings Corridor, an eight-mile greenway connecting Secor Metropark and Oak Openings Preserve Metropark.
