People Age 50 and Over Go for the Gold at 50+ Sports Classic
People across northwest Ohio age 50 and over are preparing to go for the gold in the Area Office on Aging's 50+ Sports Classic on Saturday, June 13 at St. Francis de Sales High School. BCSN’s Tom Cole will emcee the Opening Ceremony at 9:00 a.m.
There is a wide range of events from which the participants can choose. Everything from a full range of track and field events, swimming, tennis, volleyball, table tennis, horseshoes, bowling, golf--you name it, they have it. The Opening Ceremony starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 8 at St. Francis de Sales High School track with the singing of the National Anthem, carrying of the torch and lighting of the cauldron.
Individual and team athletic events continue for the rest of the day at St. Francis and surrounding athletic facilities. "The event is a good mix of those who are interested in just having some fun while getting some exercise and those who are more competitive," said Justin Moor, VP of Planning & Program Development for the Area Office on Aging.
The event focuses on the importance of physical fitness later in life and demonstrates that age has nothing to do with being up for a challenge. "Their attitude acknowledges they may not be able to perform the way they did when they were in their 20s, but they still enjoy doing the best they can against their peers." Events are divided into the following age brackets: 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74; 75-79; 80-84; 85-90; 90+. In previous years, the event has included everything from a 50 year old slam dunking to a 94 year old running the 100 meter dash.
"We can learn the lesson that people in Northwest Ohio are shattering myths about aging with their amazing athletic accomplishments. People in their 50s, 60s and beyond wearing gold medals around their necks give all new meaning to the term ‘The Golden Years.'"
The event is sponsored by The Blade, BCSN, Aetna, West Park Place Health Care.
The Area Office on Aging promotes the health, well-being and safety of older adults, persons with disabilities and family caregivers to foster independence.
