Soul City Boxing & Wrestling Gym Brings Back the Gold
(TOLEDO, OH) – After qualifying for the Junior Olympics in Reno last January, Zhane Crockett represented the US at the International Junior Olympic Championship in Taiwan May 23rd. She won the Gold Medal in the 125lb weight class making her a two-time International Champion. Outside of the ring, Zhane is an A-student at Central Catholic High School.
“This is a really big deal because it is the highest award that you can get in our sport,” said Boxing Coach Otha Jones.
During the same weekend in May, three other boxers from Soul City competed in Kentucky for the Junior Olympics Championships. Jamonate Jones, Danavion Neal and Denton Yates were among the fighters. Chris Jones and Jevon Thompson sparred in Detroit and both won their respective matches.
Soul City Boxing and Wrestling gym is an anti-gang and anti-bullying organization located on Junction in Toledo. They have tutoring, counseling, yoga, wrestling and boxing practice for 50-60 local youth. They are also a site for the Children Hunger Alliance which provides meals daily. They were recently awarded a $5K Grant from the Toledo Mud Hens Baseball Club’s Helping Hens Fund which provides support for programming that promotes overall fitness and wellness of children enrolled in kindergarten through twelfth grade.
