14 Local Artists Paint Murals in the Warehouse District
Art Corner Toledo, with administrative funding support from Toledo City Council and Lucas County Commissioners, has organized an opportunity for fourteen local artists to paint murals in the Warehouse District this summer from July 7, 2015 - September 20, 2015. The project is underway and will be completed before the Wander the Warehouse event on Sunday September 20, 2015. Additional funding support to purchase supplies from Byrne Paint to supplement a donation from Sherwin Williams was organized by the Toledo Warehouse District Association with an online Indiegogo campaign. During the Winter and Spring months, Art Corner Toledo held a series of community meetings in the Warehouse District during which local artists were invited to submit their designs after hearing input from community members. Joe Marck, the building owner, had given permission to paint twelve slots in a parking lot near Toledo Farmer's Market in order to create a sense of space and destination where now people park for Mud Hens games. The designs traveled through the local approval process and in May, were given the go ahead to begin painting when the weather allowed. The twelve local artists will be compensated by funding granted to Art Corner Toledo from Lucas County Commissioners and their names are as follows: Amber Lefevre Soboleski, Erin Peterson, Deborah Augustine, Ed Conn, Merce Culp, Amy Fidler, Daniel Mauk, Alfred Frank, Sammi Dougherty, Jeffery Weiser, Delfina Zapata, and Tina Tagle. The last two artists serve as President and Vice President of OLA (Organization of Latino Artists) who were instrumental in the first few waves of murals to be painted in Toledo's South End on Broadway Street. Each artist involved with the project has contributed to the creative renaissance in Toledo and Art Corner Toledo is thrilled to have them all on board. A separate project in the same district involves Douglas Kampfer and Natalie Lanese who will paint a baseball and Toledo treasure themed mural on Jack Wilson's Sculpture Studio building at St. Clair near Washington.
