The Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd. in Sylvania, is pleased to announce the following events. Wednesday, September 2 A Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Lourdes University Russell J. Ebeid Recreation Center is scheduled at 2 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. Attendees are encouraged to park in the Franciscan Center lot and walk across to the Mid-Campus Expansion through the Convent Blvd. entrance. The ceremony is open to the public. Thursday, September 3 The Lourdes University Auxiliary Luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. After lunch, attendees can enjoy the “Dawn of the Space Age” planetarium show. Cost: $20 per person. Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10 Father Jim Bacik will offer a brief presentation and lead discussions on his latest book Humble Confidence: Spiritual and Pastoral Guidance from Karl Rahner. TheBook Discussions begin at 5:30 p.m. each evening. Chapters 1 and 2 will be discussed on Sep. 9 and Chapters 3 and 4 will be covered on Sep. 10. Sunday, September 13 Neighborhood Properties Inc. (NPI) presents the NPI Art and Talent Show at 2 p.m. NPI is a unique and innovative service provider in northwest Ohio. Their goal is to end homelessness for persons with mental illness and addiction disorders. Monday, September 14 The Christ Child Society Toledo Chapter presents a New Member Coffee at 10 a.m. The organization offers several programs to assist children in need from birth through their growing years. With more than 200 members, the local Christ Child Society chapter offers two membership levels – Active ($65 per year) and Supporting. (S.A.V.E.) presents Keith Burris, Columnist with The Blade, on Tuesday, September 15, from 7:30 – 9 p.m. The lecture titled “Human Ecology of Writing about Toledo” is free and open to the public. Friday, September 18 The Lourdes University Lifelong Learning monthly lecture program offers “Raising the Poor to Self-Determination” with Baldemar Velásquez, an internationally recognized leader in the farmworker and immigrant rights movements. Refreshments are offered at 9:15 a.m. with the lecture held from 10 – 11 a.m. Cost: Free for members and first-time visitors. Monday, September 21 The Sylvania Franciscan Village offers its monthly Father Jim Bacik lecture series from 5:30 – 7 p.m. Father Bacik is a widely-regarded theologian, writer, lecturer and pastor, The topic of this month’s lecture is “Thomas Merton on Peace Making.” Cost: $10 in advance; $15 at the door. Saturday, September 26 The Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania present their Annual Franciscan Gala from 6 – 11 p.m. The Sisters of St. Francis support diverse ministries that include education (Lourdes University), social work, health and human services, pastoral services, retreats and spiritual direction, as well as care for the elderly and retired Sisters. Those attending the Franciscan Gala will enjoy a gourmet dinner served by Stella’s Restaurant in Perrysburg and entertainment by the KGB Motown Band. Chris Vickers, WTOL TV personality, will be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. A silent auction and raffle will be offered; and during the evening’s festivities, an artist will paint an image of the Portiuncula Chapel. Cost: $125 per person. RSVP by September 20.
