On Tuesday, September 29th at 7 pm, Way Library, in cooperation with the League of Women Voters of the Perrysburg Area (LWVPA), welcomes Dr. James Evans, Professor of Geology at Bowling Green State University, for a discussion on the removal of dams in Ohio.
The United States has the largest number of dams in the world (about 76,000 large dams), yet the era of dam building (1960s-1970s) is long over, and within the past several decades over 1000 U.S. dams have been removed. The presentation will focus on why dams were constructed, why dams create problems and risks, especially as they age, and why dams are being removed. Dr. Evans will also discuss the historical changes in rivers in NW Ohio, and the concept of river restoration.
Dr. Evans teaches hydrology and sedimentology at Bowling Green State University. His research includes human impacts on rivers, historical changes in rivers due to human activities, and river restoration. He has worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, The Nature Conservancy, has been a legislative assistant to a U.S. Congressman, and has been an expert witness in several court cases dealing with environmental liability.
This program is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served.
