The Toledo Zoo relies on a dedicated corps of 700+ volunteers who give more than 60,000 hours to the Zoo each year. On Thursday, September 24, the Zoo recognized its top volunteers of the year in four categories: Departmental, Development, Zoo-Ed and ZOOTeen. The top Departmental volunteer of 2015 is Ed Conn of Maumee. Ed has volunteered since 2013 on the Zoo’s Editorial Board, helping to expand the Zoo’s media reach. In 2015, he became a diver in the Aquarium and also serves on the Diver Safety Board. The top Development volunteer of 2015 is Nancy Nielsen of Toledo. Since 2010, Nancy’s efforts with Zoo development projects, including membership, ZooPAL and other fundraising events have helped increase these programs’ visibility as well as their revenue. The top Zoo-Ed (Zoo Educator) volunteer of 2015 is Becky Johnson of Rossford. Becky started volunteering in 2001 and has donated more than 2,900 hours of service to the Zoo. Becky has been involved in everything from on-grounds visitor interactions and late-night shifts for elephant births to all the behind-the-scenes projects that make the Zoo a success. The top ZOOTeen volunteer of 2015 is 16-year-old Zion Kania of Toledo. Zion, daughter of Brad and Jennifer Kania, joined the Zoo in 2012 and serves as the president of the ZOOTeen Program. She has donated over 1,600 hours of service and supports education, outreach and peer-mentoring programs. “Volunteers are a big part of the Toledo Zoo’s world-class status,” Bill Davis, manager of the Zoo’s volunteer programs, said. “We are grateful for all our volunteers’ generosity and hard work.” To learn more about the Zoo’s volunteer programs, please visit toledozoo.org/volunteers.
