Parade of Compassion to Kick Off Tent City
New this year to kick off Tent City will be a Parade of Compassion, set for 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The 1-mile walk will start at Promenade Park and end at Tent City, which is located downtown at the Civic Center Mall. Nonprofits, churches and other groups are invited to walk in the parade wearing their shirts or carrying their banners. There’s no cost to participate; the walk is simply meant to be a showcase of community compassion. Groups who let us know they are coming by Oct. 15 will have their name included on our compassion banner. Learn more at www.1matters.org/tentcity.
1Matters.org is a Toledo nonprofit whose mission is to leverage community compassion and deliver it to those on the streets and in the shelters, with the goal of helping people return to domestic autonomy. Tent City is our annual homeless advocacy and awareness event held at the Civic Center Mall downtown. It offers hot meals, clothing, haircuts, medical services, social services, assistance obtaining birth certificates/IDs and more. Guests and volunteers alike find themselves changes and inspired as they gather to eat, talk, listen to live music and "be 1 who matters." This year's 26th Tent City will be held Oct. 23-25, featuring the Parade of Compassion (6 p.m. Oct. 23), a Mayor's Forum (8 p.m. Oct. 23), Project Connect (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 24) and more.
