About the charity:

Walgreens' Distribution Center in Perrysburg has chosen 1Matters.org as its charity beneficiary for Fiscal Year 2016.

1Matters.org is a Toledo nonprofit whose mission is to leverage community compassion and deliver it to those on the streets and in the shelters, with the goal of helping people return to domestic autonomy. Tent City, set for Oct. 23-25, is its annual homeless advocacy and awareness event held at the Civic Center Mall downtown. It offers hot meals, clothing, haircuts, medical services, social services, assistance obtaining birth certificates/IDs and more. For more information, visit 1matters.org/tentcity.

Veterans Matter has a simple mission: House as many veterans as we can, as fast as we can. By partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)’s HUD-VASH program, Veterans Matter eliminates the last barrier keeping homeless veterans out of long-term supportive housing – the security deposit. Veterans Matter pays that security deposit directly to the landlord via a secure online system, scalable to every funded community. Referrals come exclusively from VA staff when a veteran has identified housing and is ready and able to sign the lease. Referrals are approved online within minutes, reducing the wait time from weeks to minutes. Because the program is supported by over 20 celebrities including Gary Sinise, Kid Rock, Ice-T, Katy Perry, Susan Sarandon and others who all raise funds or awareness for the program, many landlords are comfortable allowing the veteran into housing immediately. Launched in Toledo, Ohio, in 2012 when founder Ken Leslie, himself formerly homeless, learned of the funding gap prevent 35 local veterans from getting housed, the program has gone viral and has housed nearly 800 veterans in 11 states. The program’s effectiveness earned Leslie an invitation to participate in the White House Summit to End Veteran Homelessness in 2014. For more information, visit www.veteransmatter.org.
