40: The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald
The Toledo-Lucas County Public Library is proud to announce a special 40th anniversary program observing the anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald, a ship considered the largest, strongest, and fastest vessel – then, called the ‘Queen of the Great Lakes.’ The ship sank in a violent storm on Lake Superior on November 10, 1975.
The mystery and the legend of what caused the Fitzgerald to sink will be explored in a special presentation titled 40: The Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald scheduled from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, November 7 in the McMaster Center of Main Library, 325 Michigan St., in downtown Toledo.
Thomas Walton
Thomas Walton, retired Editor and Vice President of The Blade, and a member of the Fitzgerald crew as a young man, will present “10 November, the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” followed by the documentary The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The November 7 program at Main Library will also feature maritime-themed musical pieces performed by the Toledo School for the Arts’ Studio Winds.
As part of the Library’s observance of the milestone anniversary of the tragedy, a collection of items from the ship and other memorabilia on loan from Mr. Walton will be on display from November 7-30.
