National Museum of the Great Lakes announces Leader of the Lakes Program
Toledo, Ohio- The National Museum of the Great Lakes is pleased to announce a new program to its calendar of educational events. The Leader of the Lakes program is designed to introduce the public to maritime industry leaders from around the Great Lakes. The first event, scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, 2016, will feature Rear Admiral June E. Ryan, Commander of the Ninth Coast Guard District, U.S. Coast Guard. Rear Admiral Ryan will present to a group of local grade school students about the important role that education played in her career success. Approximately 200 students in 6th-8th grade will be invited to attend the engagement. Immediately following, Ryan will be the guest speaker at a ticketed luncheon in her honor at the Toledo Club. Tickets for the luncheon are available by calling 419.214.5000. Members of the National Museum of the Great Lakes are $45 per person, non-members are $50 per person. Limited sponsor tables are available for $800 each. “Leaders of the Lakes is a great way for the Society to fulfill its mission to preserve and make known the important history of the Great Lakes. As a woman in an influential position within a traditionally male dominant industry, Rear Admiral Ryan is making history and doing it well,” said Christopher Gillcrist, NMGL executive director. “We are hopeful that students from around the area will find inspiration in her story and strive to achieve a similar success in their own lives.” Rear Admiral Ryan assumed duty as the Ninth Coast Guard District Commander in June 2015. She is the senior Coast Guard Commander for the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway, an area that encompasses eight states, a 1,500 mile international border, and a workforce of over 6,000 Coast Guard active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary men and women. She previously served as Military Advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security where she supported the Secretary in affairs relating to the coordination and execution of policy and operations between the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. Rear Admiral Ryan enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserves in 1982. She attained the rank of Boatswain’s Mate Third Class before graduating from Officer Candidate School in 1985. Rear Admiral Ryan’s staff tours include assignment as the Senior Instructor, Maritime Law Enforcement School, four tours in Coast Guard Headquarters, and two tours in Coast Guard Pacific Area, including her last assignment as the Pacific Area Chief of Staff. She also served as the Military Aide to the President, the third woman in U.S. history to do so. She holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Bowling Green State University, and a Master of Arts degree in Adult Education from the University of South Florida. Rear Admiral Ryan is a graduate of the National Preparedness Initiative (NPLI) from the Harvard School of Public Health/Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Her personal awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, three Legion of Merits, six Coast Guard Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, among others. The National Museum of the Great Lakes is owned and operated by the Great Lakes Historical Society. Founded in 1944, the Great Lakes Historical Society has been preserving our shared cultural history by publishing a quarterly journal Inland Seas since 1945; by operating a maritime museum and research library since 1952; by offering educational programs to the general public since 1956; and by conducting underwater archaeological research across the Great Lakes since 2001.
