Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day Play
Come join the Jewish Community’s commemoration of Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day with a family-friendly play called I Never Saw Another Butterfly. The event will take place on Sunday, May 1st at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Shomer Emunim.
I Never Saw Another Butterfly is based on the true story of Holocaust survivor Raja Englanderova’s experience as a young girl living in the Jewish ghetto of Terezin. During this time of despair, there is a small beacon of hope for all of the children trapped in Terezin—a woman named Irena who has dedicated her life to being a teacher for the children. She encourages them to creatively express their feelings through drawings and poems.
Journey with Raja as she learns to cope with hardship through companionship and the wisdom Irena gives her.
The play will be directed by Irina Zaurov.
Local teens from the Jewish Community and Southview High School, as well as kids from the Sylvania Community Arts Commission Theatre Department are involved in telling Raja’s tale.
I Never Saw Another Butterfly is a great learning experience for anyone trying to introduce such a tricky topic to children. History has to be retold in order for succeeding generations to understand the struggles people once faced in a time of hatred and bigotry.
