Lourdes Students Prepare for 20th 'Clean Your Streams Day'
Dr. Holly Baumgartner, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. James Minesky, Associate Professor of Environmental Sciences, are pleased to announce that Lourdes University will once again participate in the 20th Clean Your Streams Day on Saturday, September 17. The project is part of the annual Lucas County program organized by the nonprofit organization Partners for Clean Streams.
Each year, one thousand volunteers join forces to clean tons of trash from over 30 miles of rivers in the greater Toledo area. Volunteers gather at one of the several kickoff locations to clean up dozens of high-profile stream bank sites along 5 major waterways, tributaries and ditches throughout our neighborhoods. Volunteers of all ages remove and record what they find on data cards, which are later reported for local and international research with the International Coastal Cleanup.
The Lourdes crew including students and College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Scholars will gather at Olander Park, 6930 Sylvania Avenue in Sylvania at 8:15 a.m. to do their part in collecting and properly disposing trash and litter found in streams.
Last year’s Lourdes University Team took first place for “Most Volunteers by a College or University” and “Battle of the Bags” collecting 19 bags of trash, two pieces of a metal railing (each 2-3 feet in length) and a lawn mower!
