What blooms in October? The Toledo Plant Exchange, Saturday, Oct. 1 downtown in the Main Library's underground parking garage.
Everyone's invited to partake in the bounty. Gardeners share perennials, bulbs, seeds, and gently-used gardening paraphernalia with others at this free event. Ornamental grasses, raspberries, saplings, bushes, ground covers, iris, daylilies, hostas, house plants, canna tubers, and more are among the items gardeners often bring to share.
Fall is the ideal time to divide and transplant many items. With good watering, they'll have enough time to establish their roots before winter's freeze.
Here's how it works:
1. 8:30 to 10 a.m.: Drop off plants (please label them) and related items in the back of the Main Library's underground parking lot. Plant Exchange volunteers organize the donated plants into various categories. Parking in the garage is free.
2. Everyone who attends may select a few free plants. People who have brought items to share will receive additional plants.
3. Before 10 a.m., visitors can peruse informational tables of gardening-related organizations.
4. At 10 a.m., the exchange opens. It ends when the plants are gone, often by 10:30 a.m. or so.
In its 11th year, the Toledo Plant Exchange is organized by area gardeners in partnership with the Lucas County Master Gardener Volunteers and the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library. It aims to beautify our neighborhoods, provide education, and build community. Find us on Facebook.
