Frogtown Storytelling Guild Presents Tellabration! 2016 featuring, Risa Cohen

On Friday, November 4, 2016, the Frogtown Storytelling Guild will celebrate its 16th year of Tellabration!—a spoken-word concert of "stories for grown-ups"—with guest storyteller, Risa Cohen. The Frogtown Storytelling Guild is pleased to welcome Ms. Cohen for this special evening. The concert will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St, Maumee, OH 43537. Tickets are $10.00 each and available from Guild members or at the door. There will also be a raffle of a lovely handcrafted glass art piece, courtesy of the Toledo Museum of Art (Toledo, OH), and a give-away of storytelling games, courtesy of CheckMate Games and Hobbies (6725 W. Central Ave., Toledo, OH).

Risa is an actress, singer, songwriter, storyteller, and teacher. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (New York, NY) and a Master of Science in Education in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Bank Street College (New York, NY). While at Bank Street, Risa took classes in storytelling from the award-winning author, folklorist, and storyteller Nina Jaffe. From then on, she fell in love with the art form. She teaches Music and Literacy at West Side Montessori School (Toledo, OH). Every day, she tells stories to her students. However, her storytelling is not limited to the children in her classroom. She has entertained audiences with her stories in a variety of settings such as libraries, schools, and theaters. Her first stories were retellings of world folk tales. She then began pairing traditional stories with original songs with the plan to write music that sounded as if it came from the same part of the world of the story’s origin. However, every song she wrote always sounded like American folk music. “I’m a ‘folkie’,” Risa admits. More recently, Risa has added personal stories to her repertoire. Risa lives in Toledo, OH with her husband and two sons.

In 1988, the first Tellabration! concerts were performed at six locations in the state of Connecticut. J. G. Pinkerton, the originator of Tellabration!, envisioned the event as a way of fostering and maintaining the art of storytelling. It was a great success and in the following year Tellabration! concerts soon spread to other states. In 1990, Tellabration! became a national event with the help of the National Storytelling Association. Its popularity continues to spread and now thousands of storytelling groups worldwide produce Tellabration! concerts.

The sponsor of Toledo's Tellabration! 2016 is the Frogtown Storytelling Guild. Sharing the spotlight with Risa Cohen will be the talented members of the Frogtown Storytelling Guild, which consists of Marion Hallauer, Glenda Garrison, Tari Miller, Regina Patrick, Odessa Rowan, Ken Solo, and Ken Wielfaert. The stories of the Frogtown Storytelling Guild members span the oral tradition: folktales, wisdom tales, legends, romantic sagas, humorous accounts, and personal narratives that explore the richness of the human condition.
