Art Corner Toledo to Unveil Public Art Piece at One Government Center, Collaboration between Community Artists and Incarcerated Men
What: Art Corner Toledo will host an unveiling of a collaborative art project painted by community artists and incarcerated individuals at Toledo Correctional. The 6’x14’ painting represents physical and psychological barriers created by incarceration, and the possibility for life and beauty to thrive in unexpected places. The unveiling commences the work’s tour public spaces throughout the city. Why: The project was designed to promote dialogue about incarceration at the local level and to humanize the prison population. When: November 3, 2016 at 10:30 am Where: One Government Center Who: The project was developed by community art coordinator Emily Numbers in collaboration with People for Change, Art Corner Toledo, and artists Matt Taylor and Yusuf Lateef. Incarcerated men at Toledo Correctional Institution designed the composition and painted the piece under the guidance of Taylor and Lateef. The project was funded by the commissioners’ office, with additional support from the Art Supply Depot and the UT Inside/Out Prison Exchange Program in the College of Arts & letters. Photo Op: Present at the unveiling will be some or all of the county commissioners, artists Lateef and Taylor, Art Corner Toledo’s Director Rachel Richardson, project coordinator Emily Numbers, and dozens of community members representing various agencies and community groups. All will gather in front of the 6’x14’ painting featuring striking imagery and vibrant color.
