Toledo, OH – The Toledo Area Humane Society (TAHS) is proud to announce that they will be offering free spay or neuter surgeries to residents who either own and know of stray cats in zip codes 43605,43609, and 43537 in the Toledo area. TAHS is able to offer these free surgeries thanks to a grant for more than $30,000 it received from PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America. The Toledo Area Humane Society is hoping that this will significantly reduce the number of stray cats in the Toledo community because it will prevent these felines from reproducing and having unnecessary litters of kittens. With this grant, Toledo Area Humane Society is estimating they will be able to offer roughly 750 surgeries this year to those who may not be able to afford it otherwise. It is reported that in the United States, approximately 3.4 million cats enter shelters in a given year. However, roughly 1.4 million of these cats will be euthanized. Statistically, this means about 34 percent of cats entering shelters will be adopted, 41 percent will be euthanized, and less that 5 percent will be returned to owner. With the approximately 750 surgeries TAHS will be able to provide for strays or otherwise unaltered cats in these three zip codes, they will be able to prevent the births of tens of thousands of cats over the next few years. With the help of animal welfare partners, such as Toledo Area Humane Society, PetSmart Charities has funded over 1.4 million spay and neuter surgeries in the U.S. since 2009. “By offering spay and neuter services to local cats, the Toledo Area Humane Society is taking a proactive approach to reducing unplanned litters and the overpopulation of cats in the Toledo area,” said Kelly Balthazor, regional relationship manager at PetSmart Charities. “With the help of this grant from PetSmart Charities, the organization will be able to help end pet homelessness and save even more pets’ lives in the community.” If you are interested in this service and live in the 43605, 43609, or 43537 zip codes, please contact the Toledo Area Humane Society to schedule your spay/neuter appointment by calling 419-891-0705. Please understand, there is limited availability and this special service will only be offered while funds last.
