Toledo Streets Newspaper Art Exposition: Street Scenes
For Immediate Release
October 4, 2017 –
The Toledo Streets Newspaper (TSN) presents a Photography Exhibition during October at the Toledo School for the Arts, in the Porter Gallery. TSN provides an almost instant means of income to the unhoused and economically marginalized in Toledo. TSN produces a monthly newspaper written by staff, unhoused vendors, and community members, focusing on social justice and community issues.
Vendors of the paper start their own microenterprise by purchasing the street paper for twenty-five cents each, and make their profit by selling them throughout the city for a $1.00 donation. Each vendor determines their own hours and locations.
“There are no hand-outs here,” said Karin Coble, local lawyer and senior member of the newspaper’s board, “The Vendors who are willing to work to move upward can start almost immediately, and make significant progress.”
In 2016, vendors collectively earned over $45,000. 2017 projections are higher, and include commissions from writing articles published in the paper. The writing team is on track to make around $8,000 during 2017 for published submissions. Vendors use money from their work to gain upward mobility and work experience. Toledoans who purchase the paper can have a big impact on the lives and self-esteem of the vendors. TSN believes that “There is no such thing as small change.”
In summer 2017, TSN vendors each received a disposable camera and were encouraged to take pictures on the theme of “Our Toledo.” Over 450 prints resulted from their work. The board curated their favorites, which are presented in this gallery collection. The event is made possible through donations and support for the community.
“We are proud of the work that our vendors do,” adds John Keegan, Program Director, “This is more than just another example of our team exceeding expectations. This exhibition reflects how the team sees themselves and the city of Toledo.”
A portion of the proceeds from postcard and poster prints of the photos will go directly to the photographer vendors. On October 18, Toledo School for the Arts will host “Street Scenes,” a fundraiser to support Toledo Streets Newspaper. The photographer vendors will be there to discuss their work and photos.
Food will be provided from Foul and Fodder, Yer Mom's House of Eats, Balance, Chef Tracy419, 7 Little Cupcakes, coffee from Flying Rhino, and more.
TSN is a member of the International Network of Street Papers, a movement with over 120 member newspapers in nearly every major city on the globe. Toledo should be proud of its support for a non-profit newspaper in the ranks of other international and national cities.
TSN is located at 913 Madison Avenue in Toledo, on Facebook, and at toledostreets.org.
