Toledo, OH -The Toledo Area Humane Society will be hosting a canine influenza vaccination event on November 4th from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. With the recent confirmed cases of the H3N2 canine influenza virus locally, the Toledo Area Humane Society is taking proactive steps to protect the dogs not only here at the shelter, but within the community as well by offering the H3N2 flu vaccine to local dog owners for $25.00. The H3N2 canine influenza virus is highly contagious among dogs and symptoms include: sneezing, nasal discharge, and frequent coughing that can last for 2 weeks or longer. All dogs are susceptible to canine flu, but there is an even greater risk for dogs who frequent dog parks, doggie day cares, boarding facilities, kennels, pet shows, groomers, and pet stores. The Toledo Area Humane Society recommends getting your dog vaccinated as soon as possible to reduce the chances of your dog becoming ill. The dogs currently residing at the Toledo Area Humane Society received their first round of the vaccine on Tuesday, October 24th in order to ensure that the dogs remain healthy both in the shelter and in their new homes. For anyone interested in vaccinating their own dogs against the H3N2 virus, they are invited to come to the shelter on Saturday, November 4th from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. No appointment is necessary and the cost is $25 per dog. Two doses of vaccine must be given before immunity is acquired– the doses are administered over a 2-to 3-week period and establish immunity within 1 to 2 weeks after the second dose.
